Pamban Bridge

Pamban Image

The Pamban bridge is built on Palk strait connects rameswaram on Pamban island to India. It is India's first sea bridge and India's second longest sea bridge constructed at a length of 2.3 km.It has both railway bridge and cantilever railway bridge. The adjoining islands and parallel rail bridge below can be viewed from the elevated two-lane road bridge,.

The railroad bridge is a double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.About 10 ships, cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month. It is also known as Indira Gandhi bridge.

It carries meter gauge trains on it. However, the Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that completed on Aug. 12, 2007. The scenery around the bridge is breathtaking. The view of the distant sea and the string of islands on the left of Pamban island is simply awesome.
